Encore Therapeutics Inc. Reports Efficacy Data on a Long-Acting Local Anesthetic Drug
CARLSBAD, Calif.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--Encore Therapeutics Inc. (ETI) today reported results of two pre-clinical efficacy studies demonstrating that its extended release Ropivicaine (ETI-211) can provide anesthetic action for 3 days. ETI-211 is designed for post-surgical pain management; to reduce opiate use and possibly shorten hospital stays.The pre-clinical studies conducted by Dr. Yang Bo, at Zhejiang University, China, demonstrated a dose dependant analgesic effect of ETI-211 that persisted for up to 72 hours when injected subdermally in a guinea pig model of cutaneous pain sensitivity. No overt toxic effects were noted at the highest doses tested and full cutaneous sensitivity was restored. ETI-211 consists of a proprietary non-liposomal phospholipid gel (PG) that incorporates the drug forming a single-phase depot system. The gel is made with existing injectable phospholipids and other components that have been used in previous FDA approved drug products. ETI-211 outperformed other liposomal anesthetic depot formulation in terms of duration of action in the same animal model.

"This can provide a range of proprietary products with lower development risk and shorter timelines to revenue generation." Dr. Andrew X. Chen, Chief Scientific Officer at ETI, further commented, "The non-liposomal PG technology represents a safe, reliable, versatile and simple approach to drug delivery that has the potential to provide subcutaneous, intramuscular or intratumoral drug depots for the extended action of a variety of drugs."
The US market for local anesthestics exceeds $1.5 billion and is growing rapidly. ETI-211 is designed to capture a significant portion of this market and increase the use of local pain killers in surgical care.
